Hi, I’m Lottie, I’m a graphic designer and a recent graduate of the Royal College of Art.

It might be the influence of my mother and grandmother, who were both teachers,
but I’ve always wanted to produce work that is educational or informative. I’m also
a bit of an environmentalist and like to try to show people how they can do all
sorts of things in a more environmentally friendly way.

For example I wanted to be able to help recession-anxious people learn how to extend
the life of their well-loved clothes so I produced a set of sewing instructions to help
people learn the lost skills of darning and fixing hems. In another project, I collaborated
with illustrator Emma Löfström to make a cookbook that encourages people to think
about the ecological impact of how and what they eat. The book uses the idea of
sharing food and conversation with friends as an enjoyable way for people to find out
more about the issues and how they might change their diets accordingly.

However, when it comes to tackling climate change, I am aware of the dangers of
encouraging behaviour which is simply too tokenistic. This is why for our final show at
the RCA I produced a campaign designed to give people ways of taking their individual
actions, big and small, and turning them into a form of political protest. Based around
the idea, “If you are already doing your bit, wouldn’t it be nice to get a bit of help?” it gave
visitors ways of writing to MPs and government ministers to show them how they are
doing their bit and asking for those in power to do more in return.

Looking at how design can encourage more sustainable behaviour has become a big
part of what I do, but ultimately, I have the broader aim of wanting to produce work that
is useful, informative and positive. This includes working for, amongst others, charities,
educational institutes and arts organizations, whilst still being aware of the impact of
my own practice as a designer who still really loves to work in print and on paper.
